I haven't had a DNA test done yet (though I want to, fascinating!) but as far as the family story goes, there is not one smidge of Irish among the Guatemalan, French-Canadian, British descent. AND... I love GREEN and especially green smoothies so here is a special St. Patty's Day themed smoothie for you that is super fresh and just a wee bit spicy ;)
The green comes from all the ingredients with a special focus on super-green superfood, Spirulina!
Lucky Green Smoothie
4-8 leaves Dino kale (remove stem)
2 Green apples
1 lime
2 tsp Spirulina powder
1" piece ginger root
1 handful raw almonds
1 Tbsp hemp seed hearts
2 T chia seeds
pinch salt
Make it: put it all in the Vitamix, add cold water to cover everything. Blend on high til smooth and creamy. Drink it, share it, tap your heels together!
Pond Scum?!!!!
What is Spirulina, anyway? It smells like a cross between foot odor and pond scum. Yum. It's actually an algae that is harvested from ponds and bodies of water super high in protein, antioxidants, iron and vitamin B-12. Pond scum. :)
Not convinced? Take a look at all the amazing health benefits of our algae friend:
-65% protein and amino acids including the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA)
-Omega 3-,6 and 9s and is especially high in Omega-3s
-High in Chlorophyll (antioxidant and immune-booster)
-High concentration of bio-available iron
-Contains vitamins B-1(thiamine), B-2 (riboflavin), B-3(nicotinamide), B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A and vitamin E. It is also a source of potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium and zinc. Spirulina contains many pigments which may be beneficial and bioavailable
-26 times the calcium in milk
-Evidence suggests that it binds with radioactive isotopes and may be useful for radioactivity exposure or radiation therapy
-Can bind with heavy metals in the body and help remove them
-Can increase fat burning during exercise.
